Today I wanted to share with you an article I recently wrote for a publication about leading as an individual contributor.

Especially early on in our careers, we are told to sit back and let someone else run the show. I disagree. Leadership can and should be found across all levels of an organization.

I hope this article will encourage you to take on a leadership role wherever you are in your career.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the professional world, leadership is no longer strictly confined to the realm of those with titles like "manager" or "director." It's an ethos, a mindset, and a set of actions that anyone, especially individual contributors, can embrace to propel their careers to new heights. 

While the traditional top-down leadership model has its merits (and was extremely entertaining to watch in Succession), leading from the middle offers a unique perspective. Individual contributors are often the ones in the trenches, possessing firsthand insights into day-to-day operations.

By championing ideas from this vantage point, you can become a bridge between front-line experiences and strategic decision-making, ultimately driving your team and your career forward.

So, why should you leave the cozy cave of self-management? Embracing leadership as an individual contributor allows you to shape your own trajectory, demonstrate your value, and carve out your niche within your organization. 

Put simply, especially in today’s job market, being a leader at every stage in your career is immensely important to success and career growth.

I believe in this idea so much that I created an Individual Contributor Leadership Checklist to get you started. Try to incorporate some of the below in your day to day. 

Ownership and Accountability:

• Chunk It Down: Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This makes it easier to tackle and track progress.

• Set Clear Deadlines: Assign specific deadlines to each task. This creates a sense of urgency and keeps you on track.

• Create a Commitment Statement: Put your commitment in writing, stating what you'll accomplish and by when. Share it with a colleague for added accountability.

• Reflect Regularly: Periodically review your accomplishments and setbacks. Adjust your approach as needed and celebrate your successes (we’re Champagne people 🍾)

Influence without Authority:

• Lead by Example: Demonstrate the behavior you want others to adopt. Your actions speak louder than words.

• Be a Resource: Share your expertise and knowledge willingly. Offer assistance to those who need it, showcasing your willingness to help.

• Connect on Common Goals: Identify shared objectives and align your efforts. Highlight how collaboration can lead to collective success.

• Highlight Wins: Celebrate group accomplishments and attribute them to the combined efforts of the team, showing your appreciation for their contributions.

Effective Communication:

• Active Listening: When someone's speaking, give them your full attention. Summarize their points to ensure understanding before responding. (Dwight can show you how NOT to do it.)

• Use Clear Language: Avoid jargon or overly complex terms. Explain ideas in a simple and relatable manner.

• Visual Aids: Use visuals like charts or diagrams to complement your verbal communication, making complex concepts easier to grasp.

• Encourage Open Feedback: Create a safe space for colleagues to provide feedback on your communication style. Use their insights to improve.

Continuous Learning:

• Set Learning Goals: Define what skills or knowledge you want to acquire within a certain timeframe.

• Create a Learning Schedule: Allocate specific time slots for learning activities, like reading articles, attending webinars, or taking online courses.

• Variety Matters: Explore a mix of sources – books, podcasts, workshops, and online resources – to gain diverse perspectives.

• Share Insights: Share what you've learned with your team or peers. Teaching reinforces your own understanding and contributes to a culture of learning.
